What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file stored by your browser. Similar technologies include local storage, which keeps data on your device without sending it with every request, and pixels, which are small image requests used to measure activity. We use the word "cookies" below to cover all of them.
Categories used on this site
Strictly necessary
Required for the site to function and for basic security. These are set without consent because the site cannot work without them.
| Purpose | Storage | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering your consent choice | Local storage | 12 months |
| Remembering your light or dark theme preference | Local storage | 12 months |
| Abuse and rate-limit protection at the server level | Server log | Short term |
These contain no advertising identifiers and never leave your device except as part of a normal server request.
Advertising
Set by Google AdSense and its partners when you consent, to select, deliver, measure and report on advertisements, to limit how many times you see the same advertisement, and to detect invalid traffic and fraud.
Where consent is required and you have not given it, advertising is served in non-personalised mode. Non-personalised advertisements still require a limited amount of data — approximate location derived from IP address, the content of the page, and fraud-prevention signals — but they are not selected on the basis of a profile built from your browsing history.
Analytics
If enabled, analytics cookies measure aggregate traffic: which pages are read, how readers arrive, and which devices they use. They are treated as non-essential and are only set with consent.
Changing your choice
You can change your decision at any time:
- Use the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page on this site.
- Delete cookies and site data for this domain in your browser settings, which resets the banner.
- Opt out of personalised advertising across the web at adssettings.google.com, aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.eu.
Blocking advertising cookies does not remove advertisements. It changes how they are selected, and it may make them less relevant to you.
Browser controls
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies. Blocking all cookies will stop this site from remembering your consent and theme choices, so the banner will reappear on each visit. Global Privacy Control signals sent by your browser are honoured where applicable law requires it.
